Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) wishes to develop a 100-acre tract as a vehicle parking area, part of the overall Colonels Island Terminal. The tract is located on Colonels Island on the south side of SR 25/US 17 in an area containing small patches of wetlands. Because of the wetlands, the project is subject to review by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. An archeological survey was conducted to ensure that Georgia Ports Authority is in compliance with Federal regulations (Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act and Section 404 of the Clean Water Act) concerning the identification and protection of significant cultural resources. The archeological survey was conducted during the week of May 12-16, 2008 by Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc. No archeological sites were found within the tract. Construction of the proposed facility will not affect any cultural resources that are eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.
