Abstract

On May 28 and 29 and August 12, 2008, New South Associates conducted a Phase I Archaeological Survey along three proposed trail segments of the North Oconee Greenway. The first segment begins in the existing North Oconee Greenway parking lot and continues south along the North Oconee River, ending just north of the Oconee Hills Cemetery. The second segment begins near the intersection of Grove Street and US 78 and continues southwest along S.R. 10 and through undeveloped University of Georgia (UGA) property until it reaches the North Oconee River. The third segment begins along the North Oconee River approximately 182 meters north of S.R. 10 and continues south along the river edge to a destination near the Athens-Clarke County water treatment facility. Two new sites and three isolated finds were encountered within the proposed trail corridor. One site is a historic rock wall and the other site is a historic bottle dump. One previously recorded site was located adjacent to the corridor. This site was previously recommended eligible to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).
