Abstract

The survey described here was designed to locate and evaluate archeological sites in one part of a Cherokee County housing development by Chatham Holdings Corporation. New portions of the River. Green development would incorporate a dam and pond. The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Historic Preservation Division (HPD). requested that the area to be developed (about 8 acres) be investigated for archeological sites. Intensive archeological survey by Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc. found no historic period or prehistoric artifacts in the project area, most of which is steeply sloping or covered in poorly drained, recent alluvium. Our investigation led us to conclude that the surveyed area contains no 'archeological sites. As a result of these conclusions, we recommend that no significant archeological resources exist within the surveyed area. Notwithstanding other considerations, we suggest the project be allowed to proceed within the surveyed area as planned.
