Abstract

The proposed projects would widen US 441 from the Florida state line to Pearson, Georgia. The proposed projects are approximately 60 miles in length. This reevaluation was concerned with a section of existing right-of-way beginning at Cowart Road and continuing for approximately 500 meters in a northerly direction. The previous alignment bypassed this short section of roadway due to the presence of historic structures. The current road design will restricted to existing right-of-way in this area. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Division Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of work of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources.
