Abstract

The proposed project consists of a re-evaluation for shoulder paving on US 441/SR 89 in Echols, Clinch, and Atkinson Counties. The proposed project on US 441/SR 89 would begin at the Florida State Line and continue northerly along US 441/SR 89 to an ending point at mile post 7.47 in the city of Pearson. In addition to shoulder paving on US 441/SR 89, intersection improvements will be constructed at the SR 89, SR 94, and SR 177 south of Fargo in Clinch County. All construction is limited to within the existing right-of-way, and no additional right-of-way will be required, except the SR 89, SR 94 and SR 177 intersection will require approximately 14 m (45 ft) of additional required right-of-way. An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed project rights-of-way was conducted for the entire 94 km (58 mi.) project corridor. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Division Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources.
