Abstract

This project consists of the widening and reconstruction of State Route 4/US 23. The project, which begins at the southern terminus of the city limit of Alma, continues north through Alma and ends approximately 1200 feet north of the overflow bridge (for Hurricane Creek). The approaches to bridges over Hurricane Creek and the overflow are part of this project, however, widening of the bridges over Hurricane Creek and the overflow will be replaced as part of Project BHF-002-1(51). The required additional rights-ofway vary from 5 feet to 50 feet. An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed rights-of-way was surveyed along the entire length of the proposed project corridor. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred with by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources.
