Abstract

The proposed project would widen and reconstruct US 1/SR 4 north of the city. of Alma. Project EDS-454(15) would begin at a point approximately 365.8 m (1,200 ft) north of the overflow bridge for Hurricane Creek then would extend northerly along existing US 1/SR 4 to an ending point approximately 457.2 m (1,500 ft) north of the intersection US 1/SR 4 and US 23/SR 19. In addition, the intersection of C.R. 257 would be realigned to intersect US 1/SR 4 at a 90 degree angle, and the intersection of US 23/SR 19 would be relocated approximately 365.8 m (1,200 ft) to the north to provide a 90 degree angle intersection with US 1/SR 4. The existing R.O.W. varies from 30 to 40 m (100 to 130 ft), while additional required R.O.W. varies from 15 to 30 m (50 to 100 ft). An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed project description was conducted for the entire 56 km (3.5 mi) project corridor. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with"GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Division Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources.
