Abstract

This report represents the results of an archaeological field survey of a proposed 201 Wastewater Facility at the Georgia Industrial Institute near Alto, Banks County, Georgia. The proposed construction area consists of expansion of an existing sewage treatment plant by several acres. The construction site is within the boundaries of the Georgia Industrial Institute and is approximately one-half mile south of the main building complex. The field investigations were conducted on March 19, 1977, and required slightly over one-half man/day to complete. Dr. Paul R. Fish, Research Associate, at the University of Georgia Department of Anthropology served as field director and principal investigator for the project. All of the proposed construction area was subjected to intensive surface survey. Ground surface in all portions of the construction site was visible due to extensive disturbance related to previous construction. Because of this disturbance, subsurface testing was deemed unnecessary. No evidence of any type of archaeological remains was encountered during these investigations. Since no archaeological sites were identified, recommendations for more intensive studies or for eligibility to the National Register of Historic Places are unnecessary.
