Abstract

Between December 1989 and June 1990 the University of Georgia, in conjunction with the Coosawattee Foundation, Inc. and a grant from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, conducted an intensive archaeological survey of approximately 1570 acres (636 hectares) in Bartow County, Georgia. The project boundary was defined as a five kilometer radius around the Mounds. The project recorded 75 sites in the area surveyed, with 16 of these sites previously recorded with the State Site Files of the University of Georgia Laboratory of Archaeology in Athens. Analysis of the artifacts collected from the archaeological sites indicate that the area surveyed has been occupied for at least the past 10,000 years. Unfortunately, residential and commercial development, open pit quarries, highway construction and a number of other cultural activities have impacted and continue to impact archaeological sites in the area. This report is an important beginning in compiling a detailed comprehensive site inventory for the surrounding vicinity of the Mounds.
