Abstract

The proposed project would construct four passing lanes on SR 24 in Burke and Jefferson Counties. Site 1 would add a westbound lane between MP 22.1 and 23.3 in Burke County; Site 2 would add an eastbound lane between MP 24.2 and 25.6 in Burke County; Site 3 would add an eastbound lane between MP 32.85 and 34.4 in Burke County; Site 4 would add a westbound lane between MP 36.9 in Burke County and MP 1.1 in Jefferson County. Existing right-of-way is 100 feet. Additional required right-of-way would be approximately 50 feet, for a total of 150 feet of proposed right-of-way. Total length of the project is approximately 5.6 miles. An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed project description was conducted for the entire length of the project corridor. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Division Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of work of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No existing or eligible National Register resources were located within the project's area of potential environmental effect. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
