Abstract

This project would improve Gentilly Road and Brannen Street in Statesboro. The Gentilly Road portion of the project begins at SR 67/Fair Road and extends 0.95 mile northward to Brannen Street. Gentilly Road would be slightly realigned to the west to intersect at SR 67/Fair Road perpendicular to Chandler Road. This new location section would extend to Edgewood Drive. The intersection of Gentilly Road and Brannen Street would be also be improved. The Brannen Street section of the project would begin at Gentilly Road and extend 0.63 mile northeast to SR 26/US 80. Existing right-of-way is 60 to 80 feet on Gentilly Road and 60 feet on Brannen Street. Approximately 20 to 40 feet of additional right-of-way would be required for the Brannen Street widening. The new location section of Gentilly Road would also require 80 feet of right-of-way. An archaeological survey of the proposed corridor was conducted for the entire length of the project. The archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred with by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No existing or eligible National Register archaeological resources were located within the proposed project's area of potential environmental effect. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will not affect archaeological resources in or eligible for inclusion in the National Register.
