Archaeological Assessment of Project F-068-1(25-26), Bulloch

The Statesboro Bypass begins at the intersection of U.S. 301/S.R. 73 at C.R. 232 south of Statesboro. The alignment traverses along new location in a southeasterly direction north of and generally parallel to C.R. 233 intersecting Register Road, Lanier Drive, and S.R. 67 all at-grade. At S.R. 67, the alignment turns north, generally parallel to and west of C.R. 340 and intersects U.S. 80 at-grade. From U.S. 80 the project continues in a northerly direction intersecting Chester Road and S.R. 24 at-grade and ties into S.R. 73/U.S. 301 north of Statesboro. The project is 6.7 miles long and the proposed typical section is a four lane divided section, two 12' lanes in each direction with a 44 foot wide grassed median. It will require a minimum of 250 feet of right-of-way and will be partial limited access. The Statesboro Bypass is divided into two projects. Project F-068-1(25) begins at S.R. 73/U.S. 301 south of Statesboro and ends at S.R. 26/U.S. 80 and is 4.3 miles in length. Project F-068-1(26) begins at S.R. 26/U.S. 80 and ends at S.R. 73/U.S. 301 north of Statesboro and is 2.4 miles in length. An archaeological survey (Level III) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT Archaeological Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologist in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodology approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources.
