Abstract

A data recovery plan was implemented at "Site 6" in Henry County, Georgia as part of 404 Corps of Engineers permitting. This procedure requires compliance with Section 106 of the Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended (Public Law 89-665). The plan included test pitting, plowed transect collection and block excavation within an occupational area and a quarry locus. These efforts revealed that Site 6 was utilized from the Early Archaic through Middle/Late Woodland periods as a lithic extraction station and camp, and possibly as a pottery clay extraction station. A minor Late Archaic fiber-tempered ceramic component (based on one sherd) was also revealed. Excavations also exposed Site 6 as a plowzone scatter with no intact cultural strata or subsurface features. Regardless of the lack of strata, the plan expanded the local archeological data base and allowed for the refinement of techniques that should result in more efficient assessment of similar sites. Based on the findings, no further significant data is likely to be extracted from Site 6.
