Abstract

Project PRLOP-37(079), Crawford County, proposes make improvements (grading, drainage, base and paving) to CR 37 (Cool Springs Road) and CR 53. Originally, this project proposed to make improvements to CR 37 from SR7/US 341 to CR 52, and was surveyed and cleared for construction by GDOT archaeologists in 1995. The project design recently changed to include the grading, drainage, base and paving of CR 53 and a slightly realigned section of CR 37 (Cool Springs Road) in the vicinity of Cool Springs Church. The project will now begin at the SR 7/US 341 and CR 53 intersection and will end at the intersection of CR 37 (Cool Springs Road) and CR 52. The proposed project will construct a 10.2 m (33.5 ft.) roadway that will consist of two 3.6 m (12 ft.) paved travel lanes and 1.5 m (5 ft.) shoulders on 24 m (80 ft) of required right-of-way. The total length of the project is 2.452 km (1.52 mi.). An archaeological survey (Level 2) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Division Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of work of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No existing or eligible National Register resources were located within the project's area of potential environmental effect. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
