Abstract

The proposed project would construct five passing lanes along SR 7/US 341 beginning at CR 71 in Crawford County, and ending just south of CR 38 in Lamar County. In Crawford County site 1 would begin at MP 4.6 and end at MP 6.0; site 2 would begin at MP 8.1 and end at MP 9.7; and site 3 would begin at MP 19.0 and end at MP 20.8. In Lamar County site 4 would begin at MP 0.7 and end at MP 2.7, and site 5 would begin at MP 3.5 and end at MP 4.3. Existing right-of-way varies from 80 to 260 feet. Proposed right-of-way would vary from 140 to 260 feet. The cumulative length of the project is approximately 7.6 miles. An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed project description was conducted for the entire length of the project corridor. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Division Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of work of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No existing or eligible National Register resources were located within the project's area of potential environmental effect. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
