The proposed project would reconstruct and widen SR 16/US 27 north of Newnan. The project would begin at a point approximately 121.9 meters (400 feet) south of Evans Drive/CR 677 then extend northerly along SR 16/US 27 to a point approximately 182.8 meters (600 feet) north of the Newnan Bypass. Existing right-of-way varies from approximately 24.3 meters (80 feet) to 30.4 meters (100 feet). An additional 7.6 meters (25 feet) to 15.2 meters (50 feet) of right-of-way would be required on the east side of SR 16/US 27, while a maximum of 10.6 meters (35 feet) of right-of-way and easement will be required on the west side of SR 16/US 27. An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed rights-of-way was conducted for the entire 0.9 kilometer (0.6 mile) project corridor. An archaeological survey (Level I) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No existing or eligible National Register archaeological resources were located within the project's area of potential environmental effect. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
