Abstract

The proposed project would replace the structural)-v deficient single-lane bjid e on C,R 157 over the CSX Railroad in Coweta County. A new bridge would be constructed on new location approximately 55 meters (180 feet) east of the existing bridge. The proposed bridge project on CR 157 would begin approximately 256 meters (840 feet) south and end approximately 396 meters (1300 feet) north of the existing bridge over the CSX Railroad. The existing right-of-way on CR 157 is approximately 24 meters (80 feet), while the proposed additional required right-of-way will be a maximum of approximately 44 meters (145 feet). County Road 157 will be closed during project construction. An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed rights-of-way was conducted for the entire .70 kilometer (.43 mile) project corridor. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No existing or eligible National Register archaeological resources were located within the project's area of potential environmental effect. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
