Abstract

The Oconee National Forest lies in Greene, Jasper, Jones, Oconee, Oglethorpe, and Putnam Counties, Georgia in the Piedmont physiographic province. This is a region of rolling hills located between the flat coastal plain and the rugged mountains of North Georgia. The present study examines the past human impacts to the natural landscapes of the Georgia Piedmont up to the point at which the U. S. government acquired some of the land in the 1930s. This will serve two purposes. One is to provide an historic context regarding how the area came to be in its present condition. The second is to try to establish the types of disturbances that may have historically occurred in the area in order to better understand how these conditions were created.
