Archaeological Assessment of Project FR009-2(78), Chatham County

Report Number
5126
Year of Publication
2000
Abstract

Project FR-009-2(78) consists of the widening of U.S. 17 from the four-lane section just north of SR 204/Abercorn Street Extension to just south of Dean Forest Road, where it would tie in with Project FR-009-2(68) (currently under construction). Widening would primarily be on the north side, although near the Little Ogeechee River a new 38'x 200' bridge would be constructed parallel and south of the existing 44' x 180' bridge over the Little Ogeechee River. The required right-ofway would be approximately 200 feet. The total length of the project is 3.4 miles. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred with by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No significant archaeological resources were located within the proposed corridor as described in paragraph two above. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will not affect archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
