Abstract

Phase I archaeological field work was conducted by Rick Richardson of this office on September 24 through 26; 1991. This work included four archaeological surveys. requested by Amy McCollum of the Fisheries Section,. of several proposed boat ramp sites. The results of these surveys are as follows: Charlton County Boat Ramp - No archaeological sites were found within the project area and no additional archaeological work is recommended. Wayne County Boat Ramp - The entire project area has been highly disturbed through past recreational activities. No archaeological sites were found within the project area and no further archaeological work is recommended. Poor Robin's Landing in Screven County - The site surface collection consisted of 25 Coastal Plain chert flakes, six Wilmington Heavy Cord Marked ceramic body sherds. two plain ceramic body sherds, and one plain ceramic rim sherd. Recent twentieth century debris was also noted throughout the project area but was not collected. A total of 11 shovel tests were excavated throughout the project area with four yielding cultural material. The four positive shovel tests were located adjacent to the fire break from which the surface collection was made. The material recovered from the shovel tests consisted of four Wilmington Heavy Cord Marked ceramic body sherds, three Coastal Plain chert flakes, and one piece of twentieth century whiteware. A program of Phase II archaeological testing is recommended. Even though the site may not be directly impacted by construction. the anticipated intensive recreational use abased on observations at other boat ramp sites) of the entire area argues that there will be an adverse impact to the site. The testing program should provide a' damage assessment of the site and define the site in terms necessary for determination of eligibility_ for the National Register of Historic Places . Blue Springs Landing in Screven County - The entire project area of the proposed boat ramp replacement at Blue Springs Landing has been highly disturbed as a consequence of previous ramp construction and associated recreational use. No archaeological sites were found and no additional archaeological work is recommended.
