Abstract

In May 1997, Brockington and Associates, Inc. conducted an archaeological survey of the proposed 15th Street extension in Liberty County, Georgia. The project was conducted for Newkirk Environmental Consultants, Inc. in compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended through 1992 (16 U.S.C. 470). The proposed new location extension corridor is approximately 5.1 kilometers (3.2 miles) long and 30 meters (100 feet) wide. It extends from the current southern terminus of 15th Street in the Fort Stewart Military Reservation, south to Georgia Highway 196. Background research included a review of: the Georgia State Archaeological Site Files in Athens; the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) list at the Department of Natural Resources, Historic Preservation Division (HPD) in Atlanta; reports of previous archaeological investigations conducted in the vicinity, on file at HPD; and historic sources pertinent to Liberty County and Coastal Georgia. Background research identified no previously recorded archaeological sites or NRHP properties within the proposed corridor. The archaeological field survey involved excavating shovel tests every 30 meters (100 feet) along the length of the proposed corridor. The survey identified no archaeological sites and one isolated find within the proposed corridor. Isolate 1 is recommended ineligible for the NRHP. No further work is recommended for this project.
