Abstract

During March 1995, a cultural resource assessment survey was conducted by Environmental Services, Inc. (ESI) of a tract associated with the proposed Middle Georgia Regional Landfill in Macon County, Georgia. The cultural resource assessment included a pedestrian inspection of the project area combined with systematic shovel testing at 30 meter intervals. A total of 11 l shovel tests was excavated within the study area. Fieldwork resulted in the recording of 8 archaeological sites within the project area, as well as a ninth site (9MA60) located on a nearby parcel. Site 9MA60 was first identified by ESI archaeologists during an earlier walkover of the landfill tract that included properties not surveyed during the present investigation. Three (9MA63-65) of the eight_ sites located within the project area as well as 9MA60 are potentially eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. Additional investigations at these three cultural resources are recommended should any be impacted by future landfill construction.
