Abstract

During May of 1996 and February of 1997, archaeologists from the Georgia Department of Transportation conducted Phase II testing of archaeological site 9CG110, the Couey-Owings-Knowles House. This property was previously recommended as eligible for the National Register of Historic Places under Criterion C in the area of architecture. This was concurred with by the Georgia State Historic Preservation Officer. The purpose of the archaeological testing of the site was to determine if the property might also be considered eligible for the NR under Criterion D, for important information it may contain about 19th century life ways in the Georgia Ridge and Valley province. Results of the test excavations provided no conclusive evidence of 19th century occupation at this site. Based on these results, archaeological site 9CG110, the Couey-Owings-Knowles House, is recommended as not eligible for listing in the NR under Criteria D.
