Abstract

Intensive archaeological survey of the Calhoun Property in the City of Augusta, Georgia, led to the location of one archaeological resource of potential National Register of Historic Places eligibility. Through the excavation of 23 auger tests and an "L"-shaped backhoe trench, a one-fourth acre domestic garbage dump dating to the early 19th century was identified beneath 80 cm of recent fill. This midden is approximately one meter thick and contains a number of ceramic, glass and metal artifacts, as well as animal bone and shell. Considering the apparent significant data obtained within the site, its integrity, and the almost total presence of historic archaeological excavation in Augusta, the site seen as a potential National Register property. One potential archaeological site was located in auger test er 8. The resource was not explored further, however, since is area is to receive no impacts.
