Abstract

Construction of the tidegate at the Landings on Skidaway Island will result in the partial destruction and flooding of a fairly large midden bordering the tidal creek. The portion of the midden to be affected is approximately 18 inches thick, 15 feet wide, and 75 feet long. Pottery from surface collection was mainly Deptford with some fiber temper ware. Just north of the creek in the area now occupied by the 14th fairway of the Landings golf course is a partially disturbed Wilmington site which may be further disturbed by the proposed construction. Onthe marsh edge just north of the proposed lagoon is Pagan Plum Point (9Ch6l) which is an important fiber temper pottery midden (late archaic). It is suggested that an attempt be made to preserve any cultural material recovered during construction of the tide gate. No excavations in the midden bordering the lagoon are recommended. A letter should be sent to the Branigar Organization asking that they mare every attempt to preserve sites located north of the lagoon.
