Abstract

In compliance with the Georgia Environmental Policy Act (GEPA) of 1991, project GIP-341(44), Long County has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) . The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the proposed project's area of potential environmental effect.

Project EDS-341(44) would provide a 526 ha (1300 acre) wetland preservation/enhancement site on the Altamaha River approximately 3.2km (2 miles) east of SR 38/US 84 in Long County, south of the City of Ludowici.

An archaeological survey (Level III) was conducted in accordance with the "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resources Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources.

The proposed 526 ha (1300 acre) wetland preservation/enhancement site was survey by Southeastern Archaeological Services of Athens, Georgia for the Department. Results of the survey were the recording of 22 archaeological sites. Additional Phase II testing indicated that three prehistoric sites are recommended eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. The proposed project would involve the removal of undesirable vegetation by burning or hand cutting (hand cutting only on one NR eligible site) and the hand replanting of indigenous tree species in certain areas of the land tract where archaeological resources are not located. Based on this, project GIP 341(44), Long County, would have no effect to the three National Register eligible archaeological sites (additional information including the archaeological survey and testing report will be forwarded to the State Historic Preservation Officer in the near future).
