Abstract

The archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with the "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Archaeologists in consultation with the staff of the Office of Historic Preservation and concurred with by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. The archaeological survey was limited due to the complete urbanization of the project area. Examination of historic maps indicate the area has experienced a shift from domestic residential to the present urban commercial/industrial development. The ground surface of the project area, including that portion of the project corridor within the Castleberry Hill Historic District, is obscured by existing structures (buildings, parking lots and streets). There were no indications that significant archaeological resources exist in the construction area of the project corridor; however, due to the history of the general project area and the Castleberry Hill Historic District. Archaeological monitoring of the construction project is recommended.
