Abstract

A Phase I archeological survey of 92 acres surrounding the proposed National Bio- and AgroDefense Facility recorded 11 previously unidentified sites. Ten of the sites are recommended ineligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) due to poor integrity and low research potential. These sites are: 9CA158, 9CA159, 9CA160, 9CA161, 9CA162, 9CA163, 9CA164, 9CA165, 9CA166, and 9CA168. Site 9CA167 is the exception. It is a small prehistoric site located next to the Middle Oconee River. Additional archeological testing is needed to determine if it is eligible to the NRHP. However, this site apparently will not be affected by the proposed project because it lies outside of the main construction zone.
