Abstract

A Phase I archeological resources survey was conducted of the proposed Little River Water Reclamation Facility in Newton County, Georgia to locate, identify, and assess the significance of archeological resources within the project Area of Potential Effects. The project area covers approximately 47 hectares (116 acres) and is located on Little River approximately 16.0 kilometers east of Covington, Georgia. Four archeological sites with at least six occupational episodes were recorded. Occupations included: one Middle-Late Woodland (Swift Creek) lithic/ceramic scatter; one Late Woodland/Early Mississippian (Woodstock) ceramic scatter; two Woodland/Mississippian lithic/ceramic scatters; one late 19`s to early 20' century house site; and one 20' century house site. Two of the archeological sites (9NE226 and 9NE228) are recommended ineligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The remaining two archeological sites (9NE227 and 9NE229) have an unknown NRHP eligibility status. Phase II testing was conducted at Site 9NE227; as a result of this work, 9NE227 was recommended ineligible for the NRHP. Site 9NE229 has an unknown NRHP eligibility but will be avoided and preserved.
