Abstract

The proposed project would widen and reconstruct CR 373/Riverside Parkway from Turner-McCall Boulevard and proceed to the North Rome Bypass for a total distance of approximately 1.5 miles. Riverside Parkway would be widened from two to four lanes from Turner-McCall Boulevard to near the Chieftains Museum (9FL48), where widening would then occur on new location approximately 100 feet east of the existing roadway. All proposed construction activities have been designed to avoid any impacts to the Chieftains Museum. After the Chieftains Museum, widening would occur primarily to the west side of the existing roadway. Existing right-of-way varies from approximately 50 to 60 feet. The proposed project would require approximately 10 to 160 feet of additional right-of-way at various locations. An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed project description was conducted for the entire length of the project corridor. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Division Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of work of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No existing or eligible National Register resources were located within the project's area of potential environmental effect. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above".
