Abstract

On March 24, 2003, Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc., completed an archeological survey of seven intersection improvement projects in Athens/Clarke County, Georgia. The intersections are located along State Road (SR) 10 in the western portion of the county (Figure 1). The survey area is one of the most heavily developed portions of Clarke County. The proposed improvements are relatively minor, consisting of the replacement of existing traffic lights with new ones, installing new controller cabinets, upgrading curbs, adding pedestrian ramps, and installing fiber optic control cables. Based on the descriptions of the projects, it appears that the only ground disturbing activities will consist of replacing curbs and installing new ramps. As described in the design concepts, the proposed improvements will be limited to the existing, graded right-of-way. The survey included archival research and a field inspection of each intersection. Representative photographs are presented in the report, following the more detailed descriptions of the intersection improvements. One copy of the final report will be curated at the Antonio J. Waring, Jr. Archaeological Laboratory, State University of West Georgia, Carrollton, Georgia. Copies of all project specific field notes, field maps, and other related photographs will be permanently archived at the Georgia Department of Transportation Office of Environment/Location.
