Abstract

The Oconee Ranger District of the Chattahoochee- Oconee National Forests is considering trading away 137 acres in Oglethorpe County, Georgia. This is an isolated tract of land that is over five kilometers from the nearest Forest land, and it is therefore hard to manage. Site 90G373 (FS #08-03-08-00941), represents a historic period farmstead recorded on this property. In 2009 National Forest personnel conducted further investigations at site 90G373 and determined that it required formal Phase II testing to determine its eligibility for the NRHP. Excavation of 26 test units recovered a large number of artifacts and provided important information on site structure and the activities of the past inhabitants of the site. It is the Forest's opinion, however, that the research documented in this report has exhausted the data producing potential of this site. Further archaeological investigations are unlikely to recover additional significant data beyond that already recovered. For that reason, site 90G373 is assessed as being not eligible for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places. It is recommended that the proposed land exchange be allowed to proceed as planned.
