Abstract

In April and May 2008, URS Corporation performed a Phase I archaeological survey for the proposed widening and reconstruction of State Route (SR) 92/Dallas Acworth Highway between Old Burnt Hickory Road in Paulding County and US 41/SR 3/Cobb Parkway in Cobb County, Georgia. During the course of the investigation, one archaeological site (9C0712) was recorded within the project area. This site consisted of a small quartz lithic scatter situated just east of SR 92 in a residential yard. The overall National Register status of Site 9CO712 is considered unknown, while the portion falling within the area of potential effect (APE) is considered noncontributing. In addition to the corridor survey, an attempt was made to relocate previously recorded site 9CO485, which the Georgia Archaeological Site File (GASF) places within the current APE near the intersection of SR 92 and Bayside Drive NW. No evidence of the site, which purportedly consisted of an Archaic and Woodland quarry location, was found. Therefore, based on the findings of background research and the Phase I survey, it is the opinion of URS that the proposed widening and reconstruction of SR 92/Dallas Acworth Hwy will not adversely impact significant archaeological resources within the project corridor. No further archaeological investigations are recommended for the proposed project.
