Abstract

On February 17 and 18, 1978 a survey of a proposed road right of way to Hampton Point, St. Simon's Island, Georgia was undertaken by two archeology students, Ms. Mimi Saffer and Ms. Sue Mullins both of the University of Florida. St. Simon's Island is located approximately ten kilometers east of Brunswick, Georgia (31 N, 81 w). Hampton Point is situated within a larger parcel of land known as Butler Point and is immediately west of Cannon's Point, the two being separated by Jones Creek (Fig. 1).' St. Simon's is one of the coastal barrier islands which stretch from Talbot Island in Florida to Cape Fear, North Carolina. To the north of St. Simon's is Sapelo Island, while Jekyll Island lies south.
