Abstract

This report discusses the methods and results of archaeological investigations conducted at the Robert Toombs Historic Site in the City of Washington, Georgia (Figure 1). The site includes five standing outbuildings and the residence of Toombs, who was a-Congressman, General, and Confederate Secretary of State (Figure 2). The purpose of this archaeological study was to provide information required for restoration and interpretation of Structure D (one of the outbuildings) and relic landscape features- on the surrounding grounds. Field work was carried out between June 29 and August 7, 1981 in concurrent phases. Investigations at Structure D-consisted of carefully controlled excavation. and detailed architectural drawing. The grounds were tested through excavation of randomly and non-randomly placed transects to locate hidden landscape details. The results of the investigation are both revealing and limited. Structure D, previously believed to have been a detached kitchen for the main residence, appears rather to have been quarters for household servants. Landscape testing revealed the foundation of a previously unrecorded outbuilding (Structure E) along with remnants of a formal flower garden. Unfortunately, the conclusions are limited due to the nature of the observed cultural material and their context. Most of the artifacts encountered through excavation were manufactured for rather long periods.
