Abstract

The project proposes to relocate a section of SR 282/US 76 southeast of Chatsworth. The project would begin at SR 61/US 411 and extend easterly on new location for approximately 0.65 mile. The project would end an estimated 1200 feet northeast of the intersection of S 2860/CR 309. A 260 by 40 feet concrete bridge would be constructed over the CSX Railroad, and a 280 x 40 feet concrete bridge would be required at Sugar Creek. Existing right-of-way is 100 feet on SR 282/US 76. Required right-of-way varies from 45 feet at the tie-in to SR 282/US 76 to 365 feet at the Sugar Creek crossing. An archaeological survey was conducted for the entire length of the proposed project corridor. The archaeological survey (Level III) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Archaeologists in consultation with staff of the Office of Historic Preservation (OHP) and concurred with by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No existing or eligible National Register archaeological resources were located within the proposed project's area of potential environmental effect. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will not affect archaeological resources in or eligible for inclusion in the National Register.
