Abstract

Site 9Wi(DOT)5 consists of a low density prehistoric lithic and ceramic scatter and an historic cemetery. The site is located south of Cedar Creek and just west of SR 11/US 129 at the intersection of SR 223 and SR 11/US 129 adjacent to the Cedar Creek Baptist Church. The site is situated on a sandy ridgetop largely within the boundary of an historic cemetery. The site measures approximately 100 meters X 150 meters. Surface visibility across the site approached 100% and no shovel tests were excavated due to the presence of human graves. One residual fabric impressed, sand tempered ceramic body sherd recovered indicates a possible Early Woodland association; while the higher frequency of chert debitage indicates a possible Archaic component. Due to the sandy nature of the site and because of the large number of historic graves excavated on the site, very little potential for intact subsurface features or deposits associated with the prehistoric components remains. It is possible that the site may be eligible for the National Register of Historic Places as a historic cemetery. However, GDOT bridge replacement project BRF-034-2(27), Wilcox County, will shift east of SR 11/US 129 to avoid impacting the cemetery; and no final NRHP evaluation will be conducted. No further cultural resource management consideration is recommended..
