Abstract

The firm of Williams Brothers Concrete Company, Inc., has proposed to construct a sand extraction plant on the Chattahoochee River, just north of the mouth of Dick's Creek, in southeastern Forsyth County. The site property is owned by Dr. John N. McClure and lies within the Chattahoochee River Corridor, between Mile 341 and 342 on the west bank. The site is also within the Georgia Mountains Area Planning and Development Commission jurisdiction, as well as the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, National Park Service and the Atlanta Regional Commission. As the site also lies in the floodplain, it comes under the Floodplain Protection Act. To prevent any adverse impacts to cultural resources of potential significance, eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places, Williams Brothers initiated an intensive archeological survey of the plant site and the proposed haul road. The Archeological Survey of Cobb County was requested to perform the work. The Survey has been active in research along the Chattahoochee River Corridor since 1970, having performed the original cultural resource surveys for the former U. S. Bureau of Outdoor Recreation.
