Abstract

This is to notify you that the above project may have an adverse effect on one potentially eligible National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) archaeological resource within the proposed project's area of potential environmental effect. This site (9GN54) is a previously recorded archaeological site on which human remains of prehistoric origin were located and partially excavated in 1972. This project consists of the proposed widening of US 17 in Brunswick from near the Torras Causeway northerly to the SR 25 Spur for a total distance of 3.17 km (1.97 mi). Existing right-of-way varies from approximately 24.38 to 76.20 m (80 - 250 ft), while the additional required right-of-way would vary from 0.00 to 36.57 m (0 - 120 ft). Archaeological survey of the project corridor resulted in the identification of this previously recorded potentially eligible NRHP archaeological resource which is located within the project's area of potential environmental effect. Pursuant to Ga. Code 12-3-52, the Department acknowledges that Native American burials are known to occur in the project vicinity. The Department will consider alternatives to avoid the site. If avoidance is not a feasible alternative, further archaeological investigations may be necessary in the area of the site.
