Abstract

The first scientific archeological investigations in recent times in Clayton County were carried out in Summer, 1971, by Chester B. DePratter. On February 10, 1972 Mr. DePratter submitted his results in REPORT ON SURVEY AND EXCAVATIONS IN CLAYTON COUNTY, Historical Jonesboro, Inc.- University of Georgia. DePratter located seventeen sites in Clayton and Fayette Counties. The second survey was undertaken by students (undergraduates) from Georgia State University under a contract with the Georgia Board of Regents. The site sheets indicate they were prepared from June, 1974, through June, 1975. The Georgia State University data was requested by Dr. Donald Crusoe, Chief Staff Archeologist for the Archeological Survey of Cobb-Fulton Counties. Dr. Roy S. Dickens;' Jr., Professor of Anthropology and Director, Laboratory of Archaeology, kindly responded with revised site sheets. The final report for this work has not been submitted by Dr. Dickens at this date. The next series of surveys for archeological/historical resources was undertaken by the Archeological Survey of Cobb-Fulton Counties. These surveys began in late 1975 and continue through the present. The survey results which are the subject of this series of reports were produced under contract with Robert and Company Associates and were carried out in order to produce a model of historic preservation of the cultural resource base within a community.
