Abstract

Planned construction of support buildings near Port Services Facilities at the Naval Submarine Base, Kings Bay, Georgia, prompted an intensive survey of a portion of the Kings Bay Site, 9CAM171C Partial. Ninety-eight 50x50 cm test units yielded disturbed shell Bidden and 134 prehistoric ceramics, representing types spanning most phases of prehistoric human occupation at Kings Bay. No features or historic artifacts were recovered. Because test units yielded a largely disturbed midden and only sparse amounts of shell and pottery, it would be unlikely for additional excavations in the study area to yield significant new information regarding prehistoric subsistence or settlement patterns. We recommended that no archaeological preservation or conservation be required for the study area, and that archaeological clearance be granted for any necessary ground disturbing activities.
