Abstract

This project involves the widening and reconstruction of U.S. 278/S.R. 6 from the proposed terminus of the Dallas Bypass (at C.R. 19 about 1 mile west of S.R. 92) in Paulding County to a point just east of Florence Road about threefourth mile west of Powder Springs (at present terminus of TSAP-6). For the widening section from C.R. 19 to approximately Elliott road, a 150 foot corridor was surveyed north of U.S. 278. The new location section from this point to TSAP-6 was surveyed using a 250 foot corridor. An archaeological survey (Level III) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT Archaeological Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodology approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No significant archaeological resources were located within the proposed project corridor as described in paragraph two above. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
