Abstract

Planned construction of a refit wharf and support buildings prompted secondary testing of a potentially undisturbed portion of the Kings Bay Site (9CAM171), a large prehistoric shell midden located on the Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base, Camden County, Georgia. The portion tested was designated the Kings Bay Site, Wharf Area (9CAM171J). Secondary testing yielded moderate amounts of shell and prehistoric ceramics. Ceramic phases most significantly represented were Late Archaic, Savannah and Swift Creek. More intensive testing of a potential Swift Creek Bidden and a mixed area Bidden was undertaken to search for subsistence features and structural patterns, but none were found. Proposed utility trench corridors were also stripped and tested for possible submidden features; several features were recovered but all were of questionable context. Excavation results indicated insufficient archaeological material within the study area to warrant further investigation. Clearance for construction activities was recommended. Archaeological monitoring of soil disturbing activities was undertaken during construction in the area; no significant data were recovered during monitoring.
