The Carmouche Cemetery: A Nineteenth Century Cemetery at Fort Benning, Georgia

Report Number
6373
Year of Publication
1983
Abstract

A nineteenth century cemetery was accidentally discovered during construction activities at Fort Benning, Georgia. Preliminary historical and archeological investigations suggest that the individuals buried there may have been members of the Missionary Colored Baptist Church. The cemetery probably dates prior to the 1880's. It is argued in the report that the cemetery contains information that is of importance to the study of Black American history and therefore-should be scientifically excavated and studied by trained professional anthropologists prior to reburial. Two alternative approaches are offered that will allow the implementation of the recommendations.
