Archaeological Assessment of Project IR-85-2(126), Gwinnett County

Report Number

Year of Publication
1999
Abstract

The proposed project consists of the reconstruction of the interchange and the replacement of the bridge at 1-85 and SR 317. All four ramps would be moved further from the SR 317 bridge over 1-85; the limits of access along SR 317 would be extended to approximately 150 feet from ramp returns. A separate drive would be constructed to maintain access to the Falcon's complex. The northwest frontage road would be relocated on new location to a point approximately 1500 feet from the interchange. An archaeological survey (Level II ) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred with by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No significant archaeological resources were located within the proposed corridor as described in paragraph two above. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will not affect archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
