Abstract

The proposed project would consist of the widening and reconstruction of SR 20 from Ozora/Cooper Road northwesterly to Plantation Boulevard, and would include a new location bypass around downtown Grayson, Georgia. The new location segment would begin approximately 305 m (1000 ft) northeast of the SR 20 and CR 316/Moon Road intersection continuing northeasterly on new location before tying back into SR 20 approximately 305 m (1000 ft) northeast of Rosebud Road for a total distance of approximately 1.6 km (1.0 mi). The existing SR 20 right-of-way is approximately 30 m (100 ft). The total required right-of-way for SR 20 would vary from approximately 6 to 18 m (20 to 60 ft) . The total required right-of-way for the new location segment would be approximately 30 m (100 ft). The total proposed project length would be approximately 6.30 km (3.90 mi). An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed right-of-way was conducted for the entire length of the project corridor. An archaeological survey (Level III) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No existing or eligible archaeological resources were located within the project's area of potential environmental effect. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
