Abstract

The original proposed project consists of the widening of SR 141 at CR 50 (Sharon Road) in order to add a left turn lane for the southbound traffic on SR 141 in Forsyth County. The existing right-of-way on SR 141 is approximately 30.5 m (100 ft). The existing right-of-way on CR 50 (Sharon Road) is approximately 24.4 m (80 ft). No additional right-of-way will be required for the completion of the project. An archaeological survey consistent with the project description was conducted along the entire approximately 0.42 km (0.27 mi) project corridor. The concept has now been revised to extend the project approximately 547 m (1794 m) south and 274 m (900 ft) north on SR 141 to widen the roadway to 4 lanes. Existing right-of-way is approximately 30 m (100 ft). Additional right-of-way would be approximately 35 m (115 ft). Also included in the project would be the reconstruction of. Sharon Road. Reconstruction would begin at the SR 141 intersection and continue for 300 m (984 ft) along Sharon Road. The additional required right-of-way has been increased to approximately 5 m (16.4 m). An archaeological survey (Level I) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No existing or eligible National Register resources were located within the project's area of potential environmental effect. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
