Archaeological Re-evaluation of Project FR-104-1(39)

Report Number

Year of Publication
1987
Abstract

The proposed project would widen and reconstruct State Route 141 for approximately 6.2 miles, beginning approximately 0.6 mile north of McGinnis Ferry Road and ending at the SR 141 and SR 9 intersection. A short section of new location would be required just east of Big Creek Elementary School to just north of Mount Calvary Baptist Church. Intersection improvements are proposed at Mathis Airport Road and Old Alpharetta Road. The existing 100 feet of right-of-way would be widened to approximately 200 feet. The archaeological survey (Level III) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred with by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No archaeological resources were located within the proposed corridor as described in paragraph two above. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will not affect archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
