Abstract

Project PR-5-1 (109) would widen and pave portions of C.R. 2, 5, and 6 south of C.R. 199 in Evans County. The proposed project would begin approximately 304.80 meters (1000 feet) south of the intersection of C.R. 5 and C.R. 2 then would extend northerly along Eason Chapel Road approximately 1.93 kilometers (1.20 miles) to a point where Eason Chapel Road transitions into C.R. 6. From this point the proposed project would extend northwesterly along C.R. 6 approximately 2.60 kilometers (1.61 miles) to the intersection of C.R. 199. An additional 6.0 meters (20 feet) of right-of-way would be required both right and left along Eason Chapel Road. An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed projects rights-of-way was surveyed for the entire 4.20 kilometer (2.61 mile) length of the proposed project corridor. An archaeological survey (Level III) was conducted based on the "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No existing or potentially eligible National Register archaeological resources were located within the proposed project's area of potential environmental effect as described in paragraph two above. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
