Abstract

Project FR-164-1(29) is the proposed widening and reconstruction of SR 54 from McDonough Road in Fayette County to US 19/41/SR 3 in Clayton County, including the replacement of existing bridges. Project BRF-164-1(18) consists of the construction of three parallel bridges. Some portions of the project would shift onto new location to improve intersections, grades and vertical and horizontal clearance. The existing right-of-way is 60 feet; an additional 50 to 100 feet would be required. The total project length is 5.7 miles. An archaeological survey consistent with the project corridor was conducted. The archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred with by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No archaeological resources were located within the proposed corridors as described in paragraph two above. It is concluded, therefore, that the projects would not affect archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the projects conform to that described above.
